Tadalafil belongs to a class of medications called PDE5 inhibitors. PDE5 normally breaks down cGMP. By temporarily inhibiting PDE5, tadalafil helps preserve this natural signaling pathway, supporting the blood-flow response needed to get and maintain an erection.
Tadalafil works only in the presence of sexual stimulation—it does not automatically cause an erection and is not a treatment for low sexual desire. Tadalafil is designed to support your natural erectile response when you are sexually stimulated. By improving blood flow to the penis, it can support erection firmness and duration and make it easier to get and maintain an erection firm enough for sexual activity. It does not create an automatic erection, and sexual stimulation is still required.
When tadalafil is prescribed for use as needed, its effect on erectile function can last for up to 36 hours after a dose, offering greater flexibility around sexual activity. This does not mean you will have an erection for 36 hours. Rather, tadalafil can support the body’s erectile response during sexual stimulation within that window. Daily treatment is another prescribing option for some patients, depending on their individual treatment plan.
Common side effects can include headache, facial flushing, nasal congestion, indigestion or mild nausea, back pain, and muscle aches. Tadalafil should not be used with nitrates and should be used with caution in people with cardiovascular disease. Rarely, an erection may last longer than 4 hours (priapism), which requires emergency medical attention. Your physician will review your cardiovascular health, medications, and other relevant medical history before determining whether treatment is appropriate for you.
